You explain it in “energy” terms rather than “spiritsoulghost” terms. Most paranormal activity really just has to do with an energy that is replaying itself in the enviromnment. Most people who die ascend to higher planes of exsistance. What we see or experience is usually either the energy replaying itself, or the etheric double of those who have passed on. Occasionally some of these energies become very negative, and they almost take on a form of consiouness. These are the”demons” that we hear about. But these are not usual. occurances and they are usually conjoured by a persongroup, or an extremely negative event. I guess the only way to not fear it is to have a faith in something higher than yourself to protect you, or to try to understand it from a knowledge or scientific point of view. Good luck.

Tell them that ghosts etc are an ancient superstition, there is not one single scrap of credible evidence for them, the supernatural is completely outside of science, physics and the known universe, the paranormal is officially rejected by science, that perceived events or happenings can be explained as the fallibility of the human mind in psychological terms and the ability to delude ourselves, extremely low probability, the fact that Randi’s million dollar Challenge has never been claimed, and did I mention that there is not one single scrap of credible evidence? You could also point out that you should believe nothing you see on TV. Explain that one should seek the evidence and question everything. Perhaps you could provide some literature, like “Why People Believe Weird Things” by Dr Michael Shermer. Have a browse around http://www.randi.org and similar sites. Rational, critical thinking people are not afraid of spooks.

A person who is right with God need have no fear, as long as they pursue honest investigation, and they are not messing around with evil. Don’t be dumb. No Ouija boards, incantations or Satanic stuff. Prepare with prayer. If you are not baptized in the Holy Spirit, stay far away from the paranormal. If you are going to go off-roading, wear a harness. Don’t mock God or put Him to the test.

Well there are a number of ways to proceed.

One could close one’s eyes real tight and repeat “there is no evidence, there is no evidence, there is no evidence” until one begins to believe this like any other religious based mantra. Of course it helps to reject all rational thought, logic, and extensive evidence that has been collected since man first kept written records. To help support this belief one can join pseudoscientific organization like James Randi’s inappropriately named “Educational Foundation” and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

On the other hand you could join organizations that don’t just accept their beliefs (and call them scientific) but who actually do research and investigation and have collected evidence, all of which shows that ghost experiences are overwhelmingly not evil or harmful.
I have listed links to such organizations below.

A person only needs to be afraid of something if it can harm them, if you look in the newspaper you can see that every day people are harmed by thugs, rapists, savage dogs, falling rocks, car accidents and so on but you never ever read about about a person that has been injured or killed by a ghost, entity or supernatural being.

So whether you believe in ghosts or not the fact that they do absolutely nothing is reason enough to not worry about them.

Tell them the truth. There is no such things as supernatural beings. There’s no monsters in the closet or under the bed.
In the entire history of humanity not one person has been harmed by a ghost, entity or supernatural being.
Tell how millions have been harmed and killed because of belief in such things.
Tell them about the witch trials, persecutions and execution’s committed on people believed to be or possessed by supernatural beings. In other words open up some History books and read them.

You can convince them. by asking why they believe in ghosts. Ask them for evidence. When they recite stories or things they heard on TV. remind them that isn’t evidence, it’s only hearsay. When they say they saw a shadow remind them of how our vision is poor in the dark or in our periphery. When they tell you of paranormal things happening at night remind them that you really can’t be a reliable witness of anything when you’re sleepy. Basically, open their eyes to the difference between actual objective evidence and subjective power of suggestion and hearsay.

If you can do that, then they’ll cease to be afraid of ghosts. If you can’t do that, they are basically doomed to fall for all sorts of irrational beliefs and bogus claims.

Whether or not a person believes in ghosts has everything to do with their belief system. So what determines what belief system a person has? *Generally speaking*, if you compare those who believe vs. those who don’t you will notice some pretty glaring differences.

I have noticed that believers tend to use what many people call “magical thinking”. There seems to be an eagerness among them to find fuzzy, fanciful explanations for how the world works. They tend to rely on emotional, intuitive or spiritual explanations. They also tend to have views that incorporate mythological (and often superstitious) beliefs. Believers also tend to be more in tune with New Age ideas.

Skeptics, on the other hand, tend to employ explanations that rely on rational, science-based rules, laws and reasoning. For the most part they value scientific precepts like evidence, reasoning, repeatability, probability, predictability and so on. If something (i.e. ghosts) really exists, then it should be observable, measurable and predictable.

So, in a gross generalization, the believers often “feel” or experience something while skeptics want to analyze or observe it. As of yet, there is no evidence supporting the claim that ghosts exist. On the contrary, there is a plenty of evidence that what is often perceived as a ghost is not really a ghost.

Frequently you have mind tricks, such as confirmation bias, which cause a person to be convinced he is seeing ghosts where an impartial observer would see none.

Also, I think the place of ghosts in mythology is pretty easy to trace when you make an effort to understand *why* supernatural entities exist in our culture. Death is a common mystery. In our fear of death and desire for immortality, different cultures have come to terms with death in different ways. I see angels, demons and spiritual remnants of those dead and gone as natural examples of “wishful thinking”. However, there is neither evidence nor reason to suggest such things have ever existed.

I don’t believe that you can convince someone not to be afraid of anything that is real, imaginary or of the spirit realm. Every human is equipt with the flee or fight. When encountered with say a ghost or spirit that is in a home or business you have to rely on wether or not that spirit/ghost is just making it’s presence known and or if it is trying to harm or frighten them. If it is a benign spirit/ghost you can inform that person that you do not feel that it is here to hurt or harm you that it just likes to let you know every now and then that it is here. If it is a spirit or an inhuman spirit that is there with an agenda then depending on the person’s religion or non-religion there are different way’s of dealing with the ghost/spirit/demon. Do not show fear some spirits feed off of your fear and turmoil, negitivity and emotion’s. Remember that he who is in you (God) is more powerful than him that is not(Satan). Sometime’s if it is just a spirit/ghost that is in your space you just have to reclaim your space and take it back. Tell the ghost/spirit that this is you home now and that they are not welcome here to leave. If it be demon get help either by a qualified demonologist, priest,or someone that can do smudging,or cleansings. Only someone that is qualified should do these.

The best answer seems to be given by psiexploration but his answer is “hidden due to it’s low rating” due to the skeptics fear of a well reasoned answer and their temper tantrum of thumbs down on his answer.
Check it out for an actual answer and helpful links.
Oh and if you don’t support censorship give it a thumbs up.
